Nassau County is cracking down on unlicensed limo drivers and operators as prom season gets into full swing.

Officials in the county are urging parents to make sure the limo or party bus their children ride are licensed by Nassau. All licensed limos have a specific type of plate.

"We register vehicles," says Nassau County Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner John Capece. "We also vet drivers that drive the commercial vehicles that are allowed to take passengers, pick up passengers for hire in Nassau County."

SGB Limousine president Steven Berry says parents booking limos should make sure the company is properly licensed in the area.

"They can check if they are in Nassau and Suffolk if they have a TLC license," Berry says. "If it's a bigger vehicle, they would be licensed by the state Department of Transportation and all of which would have some type of diamond in the window."

Ahead of prom season, Nassau County has already issued over 20 tickets to improperly licensed limo drivers.
