State senator pushes for more restrictions to limit social media access to kids

A state senator who represents parts of Nassau County is pushing to get more restrictions put in place to protect kids from the dangers of social media.
Sen. Jack Martins introduced legislation that would make it illegal for minors to use certain online sites without parental consent.
The bill would make social media companies get parental consent before allowing children to use their platforms during late evening into early morning. It also takes aim at companies like Facebook, TikTok, Twitter and Instagram
Hofstra professor and mental health expert Keith Scott says while there's good intention behind this bill, there is still a need to be more of a preventative society than a reactionary society.
"So, while I know there's great meaning behind the bill, I want to have more conversations about prevention programs about how we can equip parents to be better educated on how dangerous social media is," says Scott.
The bill would also establish penalties for social media companies that do not comply with these rules.
