A handful of firefighters are recovering after battling flames at a commercial building in Elmont.

Nassau's chief fire marshal says 100 firefighters rushed to the scene on Linden Boulevard Monday night.

Firefighters in Elmont saw smoke from their firehouse nearby.

News 12 has been told it took an hour to get the blaze under control.

Three firemen were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation and another one sustained a minor laceration to his hand. That firefighter was taken to the hospital.

News 12 Long Island has learned there were nine to 10 tenants inside at the time of the fire, and that all of them got out on their own.

Two of those tenants were checked for smoke inhalation.

The Nassau fire chief also told News 12 that a fire inspection found that the sprinkler system was shut down and not working.

The owners of the building have been told that no one is allowed back on the property until the entire sprinkler system is restored and meets fire code standards.
