Two years after a powerful summer storm destroyed a dam and washed out Harbor Road in Stony Brook, residents say they are frustrated by the lack of visible progress and eager to see construction finally begin.

The August 2024 storm left a massive gap where Harbor Road once crossed the area, cutting off a key route between Head of the Harbor and Stony Brook. Residents say the damage remains a painful reminder of the storm's impact on the community.

“What’s even more shocking is it’s still like this after two years, a literal hole in the heart of Stony Brook,” said Beth Zweig, a Head of the Harbor resident.

Neighbors say the loss extends beyond transportation. The washout also drained a beloved duck pond that generations of families enjoyed.

“It’s just such a part of our community,” said Stony Brook resident Dori Scofield. “My grandchildren don’t even know what the duck pond looks like. I used to bring my children here growing up. It’s just really sad.”

Residents say they have grown increasingly impatient as the repair process has stretched on.

“A lot of time was needlessly wasted pointing fingers and not actually making progress,” Zweig said.

The Ward Melville Heritage Organization, which owns the property, said planning efforts are moving forward.

In a statement to News 12, the organization said it is currently in the construction planning phase of the project and is seeking required signatures for applications to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

“WMHO is happy to currently be in the construction plans phase of the project, and applications are out for signatures for DEC. The construction plans will be ready for submission by the end of August,” the statement said.

Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro said he is hopeful the project could reach another milestone in the coming months.

“I’m hoping we can have an approved design and go out to bid this winter so we can start construction next year,” Losquadro said.

Residents say the road and pond are a vital part of the community’s identity and history, and they are hopeful repairs will finally begin in the near future.
