More concerns are growing as more cannabis dispensaries are popping up. Two Nassau County town supervisors are calling out cannabis retailers, who they say are "exploiting state law," operating at the border of Nassau and Queens counties. A cannabis dispensary is set to open at the former Citi Bank property on Union Turnpike.

All three towns in Nassau voted against legal marijuana sales when they became legal in New York in 2021. However, New York City gave dispensaries the green light, and now some shops are opening very close to the Town of North Hempstead.

Now, Town Supervisor Jen Desena wants the state to create a "buffer zone" that would prevent shops in Queens from opening within a mile of the town. "This is about to become a horrible problem," said Supervisor Desena. "We could have a line of marijuana stores up and down bordering Great Neck, New Hyde Park, all of our suburban families."

Supervisor Desena says she talked to state senators about introducing legislation. The Office of Cannabis Management did not comment directly on the matter.

Supervisors Jen Desena and Don Clavin will hold a press conference Friday at 11 a.m. in Queens.
