2 dogs killed in Central Islip house fire; Brooklyn man arrested for arson

Suffolk County police say two dogs died and a Brooklyn man was arrested after an overnight house fire in Central Islip.

Police say they responded to a 911 call Saturday at 12:20 a.m. for a fire at 23 East Cherry St. Officers attempted to enter the home to and save two dogs that were stuck inside but they were unsuccessful.

The Central Islip Fire Department, along with other fire departments, was able to extinguish the fire and locate the dogs who were dead, according to police.

Five police officers were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Police say following an investigation by Arson detectives, Robert Alston, the son of the homeowners, was charged with arson , burglary and false personation.

He was arraigned on Oct. 3 at First District Court in Central Islip.
