Dozens of firefighters managed to bring a fire under control at an apartment building in Yonkers on Saturday evening.
Officials say the fire at 59 Maple St. started just before 6 p.m. before it quickly spread and escalated to two alarms, forcing tenants to evacuate.
Upon learning of the devastation caused by the flames, Chaplain Jose Ortiz, of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, rushed to the scene to offer help.
"Anybody in the neighborhood can come to the Seventh Day Adventist Church on the corner of Maple and Waverly. We're open there right now. We're actually serving some food there, and we also got hot chocolate, coffee and fruits and vegetables, whatever they want to eat now...we have blankets and a bunch of other stuff that people might need," Ortiz said.
A cause of the fire or reports of any injuries were not immediately know as of Saturday night.
The Red Cross assisted fire victims with vouchers and temporary shelter.
