2 African penguin chicks hatch at Mystic Aquarium during snowstorm

The aquarium says the hatchings are especially important because African penguins are critically endangered and their wild population has declined by 97% worldwide.

The Mystic Aquarium says two African penguin chicks hatched during this weekend's snowstorm.

The chicks are currently being monitored by the aquarium's penguin and veterinary teams.

Their names have not been announced.

The aquarium says the hatchings are especially important because African penguins are critically endangered and their wild population has declined by 97% worldwide.

The aquarium is part of the AZA Species Survival Plan which helps protect the species.
