Nassau County awarded 61 first-time homebuyers Monday the opportunity to buy foreclosed homes renovated with federal funds and subsidized to be kept affordable.
The county held a lottery to choose the lucky future homeowners. While the winners get a chance at home ownership, the county also benefits by getting blighted properties back on tax rolls.
"It is really important to get families back into these homes and not keep them vacant in the community," says Peter Elkowitz, of the Long Island Housing Partnership.
