Dozens of people will be swimming across the Great South Bay early Thursday.
A total of 120 people will swim 5.6 miles for the Maggie Fischer Memorial Cross Bay Swim.
Proceeds will go to Hospice Care Network and a scholarship in Fischer's name.
Fischer was 17 when she was killed in a car accident days before the race in 1999.
The race starts at the Fire Island Lighthouse and ends at Gilbert Park in Brightwaters.
