The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released tips for minimizing everyday risks of getting and spreading COVID-19, including tips for going to the library.
In general, the CDC says, the more closely you interact with others and the longer that interaction, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread. Read about the 15 questions to ask yourself before venturing out during the COVID-19 pandemic here.
Here are 11 tips for visiting a library:
1. Use online reservation and advance-order checkout systems, if possible.
2. Choose digital over print materials, if possible.
3. Request a curbside pick-up if available.
4. Check with your library for their return rules. Some are requesting that returns be made only on outside book drops.
5. Wash your hands before and after exchanges.
6. Use cloth face coverings during pick-up exchanges and when entering the library.
7. If you are entering the library, and browsing books, maintain social distancing practices and follow any directional and distancing markers on the floors.
8. Some libraries are also limiting the time that patrons can be inside.
9. Clean and disinfect electronics (laptops) and library materials in plastic containers (CDs, audio books) during returns and/or exchanges.
10. If allowed and available inside the library, use computer stations one person at a time. Ensure they are cleaned before use and use a disinfectant wipe on the mouse and keyboard.
11. Before visiting, check your library’s rules.
