The New York State Democratic Committee is hosting its 2026 state convention in Syracuse on Friday. But before it gets underway, the woman at the center of it all, Gov. Kathy Hochul, sat down for a wide-ranging conversation with our senior political reporter Tara Rosenblum for her first interview since naming a new running mate.

Hochul on Adrienne Adams:

"She has such an in-depth knowledge of New York City. It is extraordinary."

Hochul on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's endorsement:

"It shows that we are willing to work together - roll up our sleeves. That's what New Yorkers want."

Hochul on taxes:

"I don't believe in raising taxes for the sake of raising taxes."

Hochul on ICE and County Executive Bruce Blakeman:

"I don't think local law enforcement should be turned into ICE agents when they are trying to build trust in communities. Trust in communities is the most important part of policing, as they want to keep focusing on these emergencies and accidents and snowstorms and if there is a robbery or car theft. That's what our local police should be focusing on."

Hochul on crime:

"Crime statistics are not getting better just because we wanted them to. They are getting better because they do have a law-and-order governor now who believes that we need to do everything we can to keep our communities safe."
