West Point officials say one cadet was killed and 22 men and women were injured when a vehicle they were riding in for summer training overturned.
The U.S. Military Academy says the 5-ton soft top military truck overturned on a dirt road in rough terrain around 6:45 a.m. Thursday. Twenty cadets and two soldiers on the light medium tactical vehicle were injured.
"They were headed to land navigation training when they were in the back of the truck, they were being transferred to the training site and that's when the vehicle had the accident," says West Point Superintendent Lt. General Darryll Williams.
The accident occurred near Camp Natural Bridge, an area where cadet summer training takes place. The military truck that can carry personnel had two people in the front cab and the rest in the back.
Williams says the deceased victim was pronounced dead at the scene near Route 293 in Highland Falls and those hurt - a mix of cadets and soldiers - were taken to area hospitals, two by helicopter, but none with life-threatening injuries.
West Point officials say the name of the deceased cadet will be released Friday after family is notified. They say the names of the injured cadets will not be released.
In a statement, Gov. Andrew Cuomo expressed his grief over the tragedy.
"My heart breaks for all those involved in the tragic training accident at West Point this morning. These courageous cadets and soldiers represent the best of New York State and our country, and we owe them a debt of gratitude for their bravery in choosing to serve our country and protect our freedoms. This incident is made all the more heart wrenching as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day today, a day where we remember those who gave their lives for our country. On behalf of all New Yorkers, we pray for a speedy recovery for those involved and we share in the sorrow experienced by their loved ones during this extremely difficult time."
President Trump tweeted his condolences. "So sorry to hear about the terrible accident involving our GREAT West Point Cadets. We mourn the loss of life and pray for the injured. God Bless them ALL!"
