A solemn procession slowly made its way down Glen Cove Avenue in Glen Head Friday as the body of Marine Sgt. Robert Hendriks returned home to Long Island.
The 25-year-old from Locust Valley was one of three Marine reservists killed earlier this month when their convoy was struck by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. Another victim was Staff Sgt. Christopher Slutman, a member of the FDNY.
Relatives, neighbors and friends looked on in sadness as Hendriks' casket was carried inside Whitting Funeral Home in Glen Head.
Wake services for Hendriks are scheduled for Tuesday at Whitting Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest Wednesday at Calverton National Cemetery with full military honors.
Hendriks enlisted in the Marines in 2012 after graduating from Locust Valley High School.
