Jurors deliberate for 3rd day without verdict in Mangano retrial
A third day of deliberations in the corruption retrial of former Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and his wife Linda ended without a verdict from the jury.
On Monday, the jury asked for testimony from FBI Special Agent Laura Spence, who interviewed Linda Mangano on several occasions. That suggested the jury was focusing on Linda Mangano and whether she lied to the FBI.
There was no word from jurors for hours Tuesday, until around 4:45 p.m., when the jury foreman sent a note to Judge Joan Azrack requesting transcripts of testimony from three figures at the center of what prosecutors call the "Oyster Bay loan scheme." Those people include former Oyster Bay outside legal counsel Jonathan Sinnreich, former Oyster Bay Deputy Town Supervisor Len Genova, and William Savino, a lawyer from the private firm that once employed Ed Mangano.
The central question is whether Ed Mangano exerted political influence on the Town of Oyster Bay to back the loans of restaurateur Harenda Singh, who the prosecution says was bribing the former county executive.
Kevin Keating, who represents Ed Mangano, says he feels confident about having "a fair jury." And John Carman, who represents Linda Mangano, says "we're all just guessing at this stage," although he also feels confident in a favorable verdict for his client.
The jury will receive the requested transcripts when they return to the courthouse for Day 4 of deliberations.
