Parents and their kids are still wondering if summer camps will be up and running when school lets out, and while Gov. Andrew Cuomo hasn't made an official decision, he offered some insight into where he's leaning.
In an emotional Facebook post, Ross and Kellli Coleman announced they're not opening Coleman Country Day Camp this summer. It's just one of a number of camps that have made the decision amid coronavirus concerns.
"It just kept coming back to that love of the Coleman family and the trust you all put in us to keep you safe," says Ross Coleman.
Carley Leibowitz was supposed to return as a head counselor this summer. She says she's disappointed but understands "it's what we have to do."
Gov. Cuomo has not yet issued an official directive on if camps should be allowed to open, but did offer a comment at Thursday's briefing.
"Until we know how widespread this is, I would not send my children to a day camp, and if I wouldn't send my children to a day camp, I wouldn't ask anybody else to," said Cuomo.
Mark Transport, co-owner of Crestwood Day Camp and president of the 25-member Long Island Camps and Private Schools Association, says he's awaiting Cuomo's guidelines to reopening, and could even open a few weeks late if need be.
Transport says having campers and staff take COVID-19 tests before returning to camp and on a daily basis might be some of the requirements.
