A Coram woman whose SUV was stolen with her disabled son's wheelchair inside has received a generous gift for the holidays.
As reported last week, Roxanne Drayton's vehicle was stolen outside of her home in November. Inside the vehicle was an $8,000 custom wheelchair she uses to bring her son Todd to doctors appointments. Todd has Down syndrome, suffers from epilepsy, has a steel rod in his back and requires a feeding tube and oxygen.
After watching News 12's report, H&J Medical Supplies in Lindenhurst promised to donate a new wheelchair and made good on that promise Monday morning.
Angie Policastro, one of Todd's nurses, was the person who called News 12, asking for help finding Todd's chair.
"I'm surprised...what one phone call can do," she says.
Many Long Islanders have blessed Drayton and Todd since the story aired by opening up their hearts and their wallets to help.
"It brought tears to my eyes," Drayton says.
On Saturday, Generation Kia in Bohemia gave Drayton a brand-new vehicle. And Todd's new wheelchair will be fitted with everything he needs. It's expected to be ready in a few weeks.
Police are still searching for the person who stole Drayton's SUV.
