In celebration of Women's History Month, News 12 is honoring three women who strive to bring healthy food to their Bronx community.
Five years ago, Chrys, Sherrill and Lourdes created the North East Bronx Community Farmer's Market Project and never looked back. Their goal was to make fresh produce, food education and economic opportunity available in the Bronx through their nonprofit.
They hold a seasonal farmer's market at Preston High School on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. which has evolved to have 75 to 100 customers per week now. Their organization also supports a food pantry by providing fresh food to 500 families per week on Wednesdays and Saturdays at St. Benedict's. All while empowering people to learn about healthy food and habits through workshops, especially youth.
The three-woman team says their market and organization have grown organically just like the food they provide and hope it can be an example for others.
Next, they want to provide an internship and mentorship program to expand their team and reach.
