The fire chief of Westport returned from playing a vital role in protecting crews fighting a raging wildfire in Minnesota.
Fire Chief Robert Yost says the fire was at 0% containment with about 6,000 acres burning when he arrived to help withe the Greenwood Fire last month.
Yost has helped with wildfires before, but says this time was different.
Responsible for the safety of 400 firefighters, Yost relied on his background as a paramedic for medical incident command.
“My job was to create the medical plan,” says Yost. “What if somebody gets hurt or sick on the line and how do we evacuate them.”
He says that in the 17 days he was out there, “We didn’t have one significant injury.”
Yost says he’s already looking forward to his next assignment.
The Greenwood Fire in Minnesota is now 49% contained.
Authorities say the fire was started by lightning.
The fire has burned 26,000 acres.
