Brookhaven Supervisor Mark Lesko announced today that he's stepping down next month.
The Democrat says he's leaving to become the executive director of the nonprofit group Accelerate Long Island.
Lesko became town supervisor in 2009 after winning a special election to fill the slot vacated by Brian Foley, and Lesko was re-elected last November.
The nonprofit aims to jump-start Long Island's economy by creating a hub of high-tech and bioscience companies.
"The effort here is to create start up companies, and who knows, maybe we'll create the next Google here on Long Island," says Lesko.
Town Republicans however are upset with Lesko's decision, saying it is an "act of cowardice" with the town's budget due Sept. 15.
A special election will be held Nov. 6 to fill the Brookhaven Town supervisor position. Until then, Deputy Supervisor Kathy Walsh will become the acting Brookhaven Town supervisor once Lesko steps down.
