A heartbroken husband is searching for answers after his wife was killed in a hit-and-run last weekend.
"I said I would come back and see you some other time," said James Nevelus. This is a promise he made to his wife Lisette, one he couldn't have imagined would be broken.
She was killed last Saturday in a hit-and-run on Pennslyvania Avenue. The driver is still on the loose.
"I need to have justice for my wife because I don't know exactly what happened," said Nevelus. He's now calling out the Liberty House, a transitional facility run by Housing Plus to divert women from Riker's Island.
Lisette Nevelus was schizophrenic, according to her husband. She was released from jail on Nov. 26. "Why would they let her out on the street at 4 o'clock in the morning?" said Nevelus.
In a statement, the executive director at Riker's Island said," Our program does not provide 24/7 security and we do not accept referrals for anyone requiring that."
They also said they were saddened by the tragedy and that it is terrible when something unexpected happens. They say it's even worse when she was simply trying to get her life back.
Her husband is now left to raise four children on his own. "My children! Who's going to be helping me here?" said Nevelus.
