AAA says it receives 600,000 calls per week from stranded drivers nationwide during the winter, so they are offering some tips to prepare drivers for the season.

The biggest issues in cold weather are flat tires, dead batteries and lockouts, according to AAA.

They recommend drivers regularly check tire pressure, always keep a full tank of gas and replenish windshield wiper fluid.

AAA also advises that drivers switch to synthetic oil for the winter to protect their car's engine.

According to the automobile association, the need to warm up your car in cold weather before driving is a big misconception.

"Lockouts happen because people are trying to warm up their vehicle, that's not necessary. Get in the vehicle, start it up, put the seat belt on, put on the radio, and then drive gently for five or 10 minutes. In very cold weather, it's more than just an inconvenience, being broken down on the side of the road, it's a danger," according Robert Sinclair Jr., the manager for media relations for AAA Northeast.
