Service has been restored on the Long Island Rail Road's Long Beach branch after an equipment train slammed into a car in East Rockaway Monday.

It happened after 3:30 p.m. at the crossing gate at Forest and Rocklyn avenues in East Rockaway.

The train did not have any passengers on board and witnesses say it was traveling at a slow speed.

Witnesses say the driver did not try to stop.

Juliana Dirosa says an elderly man driving an Infiniti, drove around the down gate arms. At the same time, a westbound train on the Long Beach line was coming down the track. Dirosa saw and heard the impact.

Dirosa and a friend rushed to the crumpled car, fearing the man was dead. But when they looked inside, they say they were shocked.

"He was moving his head so it was promising and then the cops were called," said Daniel Springsteen.

"I don't know how he made it out alive. It's a miracle," said Dirosa.

The 87-year-old driver of the car was taken to the hospital. His name and condition are unknown.
