At the NYC Barbershop Museum a shave and a haircut is more than just grooming, it’s a celebration of its history.

Rasheed Hart, the general manager of the NYC Barbershop Museum, says there is so much history in the art of grooming.

Hart says when customers selected the barbershop of their choice, they were making a commitment.

“These are called shaving mugs and the significance of the shaving mug is that when a man chose a barbershop for himself, he actually left his shaving mug at the shop, so it changed the dialogue from the barbershop to my barbershop because I actually had a personal item here,” says Hart.

The museum also features items that are no longer available or found in barbershops today.

“This is an American-made chair, and one of the significant things that we love about this as an American-made chair, and the company no longer exists, however, the product that they created goes back to a time when American-made things could stand the test of time, unlike now in modern times when things have a life span, so this beautiful chair, everything is original except that it’s reupholstered,” says Hart.
