Permits for a carnival at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove have been revoked after a worker was accused of inappropriately touching a child on a ride.
Prosecutors say Louis Shelton was working the carnival Wednesday evening when he inappropriately touched a 7-year-old girl who he was strapping in on the carousel.
Shelton, 50, of Pennsylvania, was charged with sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
News 12 spoke with a consultant for Dreamland Amusements, the company that runs the carnival.
"The operator was buckling the girl in- on the horse,” they said. “The buckle is attached to the poll that goes between your legs- like thousands of other riders.
The mother got the wrong impression and didn't complain until 30 minutes later."
Lake Grove Village Mayor Robert Scottaline says he quickly called a special meeting and village officials voted to immediately revoke the special permit allowing the carnival to operate. The carnival was originally going to be at the mall until June 9.
Dreamland Amusements says it has fully cooperated with law enforcement. The company also says it makes great efforts to properly train ride operators and they believe the ride operator will be exonerated.
Detectives are asking anyone with information or who believes they may be a victim to call the Special Victims Section at (631) 852-6184.
