Tenants in Brooklyn called on state leaders Thursday to push a group of bills aimed to protect tenants across New York state.
Community leaders and tenants say they want universal rent control. State Sen. Julia Salazar is proposing the "Good Cause" Eviction bill, which would prohibit landlords from evicting tenants without a valid reason like not paying rent or damaging property.

The bill is one of nine going before state Legislature to address tenant protections.

The law currently only allows rent control for buildings with six units or more, which means anything less does not qualify.

Make the Road New York says they're fighting on behalf of Mirella Vega, who received an eviction notice at her Bushwick apartment she lived in for eight years.

Vega applied for NYCHA, but the nonprofit says she's one of thousands of names on its waiting list. Make the Road New York says they need the laws to change so they can help more tenants like Vega.

A spokesperson for Gov. Andrew Cuomo told News 12 in a statement, "The Governor is fully committed to working with the legislature and tenant community to reform rent regulations to protect affordable housing and respect tenant's rights."

Rent laws are set to expire in June.
