Suffolk PD commissioner: Crime stats at historic lows
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini announced Wednesday that the department he leads is driving crime stats well beyond historic lows.
In the last three months, Sini says violent crimes are down about 25 percent, property crimes are down over 5 percent and overall crimes have dropped about 7 percent.
At the end of last year, overall crime was down nearly 6 percent.
Sini says it's due to an increased focus on taking drugs and firearms off the streets, along with a new gang suppression strategy focused on MS-13. He also credited a heightened effort to crack down on driving violations.
"We're targeting the right people. We're targeting the right spots, and we're collaborating with the community to solve problems," says Sini.
Sini reiterated his pledge to solve all of the murders in the Brentwood area that took place last year, and to ultimately eradicate the MS-13 gang from that area.
Bishop Andy Lewter, of the Hollywood Full Gospel Baptist Cathedral, says the statistics unveiled by Sini back up what he's seen in Amityville. He credits the police department's willingness to reach out to members of minority communities in order to build trust.
"We are encouraged to see that the compatibility of the community and police is obviously yielding positive results," says Lewter.
