A non-profit providing social services for Asian American immigrants, seniors, and other disadvantaged people in southern Brooklyn is making strives for the community.

Homecrest Community Services is transitioning its "stir fry meals and wheels" program to "stir fry to-go" to continue to help the elderly in the community.

Before the pandemic, seniors came to the neighborhood senior center for meals every day.

 "Easily 200-300 meals between the centers every day," said Don Lee, Homecrest Community Services.

The organization quickly pivoted to delivering meals and now, they've transitioned that program to to-go.

"One of the seniors said to me today is 'Liberation Day', so I thought that was pretty funny they are all calling it Liberation Day, that they are free to come back out," Lee said.

It was an exciting day that caused a long line to form down the street.

"It's just bringing people back to normalcy," Lee added. "Getting Brooklyn in New York City back to normal, having seniors to see them at least once a day get a hot meal. See each other, see their friends."

Especially now, it's about so much more than just having a good meal.

"When we first started, it was a simple mission just to provide for and to give a place where seniors can come and enjoy their golden year," Lee explained. "But in the last year and a half with the rise in Anti-Asian hate crime, there's an addition to let people know we exist. That we are a part of New York, and we are just as visible anyone else."

They say being united once again is also giving them a chance to support one another and show solidarity with their community.
