Police: School bus driver sexually abused 6-year-old
A bus driver in the Northport-East Northport School District is accused of sex abuse and having child pornography.
Charles Titone III, 46, of Huntington Station, was arrested at his home. Detectives say a tip from the New York State Internet Crimes Against Children task force led them to Titone.
According to court documents, Titone admitted to having child pornography on his phone and having sexual contact with a 6-year-old that he knew.
However, the victim was not a student from his bus route.
School officials sent a note to parents saying Titone drove a small bus for Northport High School, Northport Middle School, East Northport Middle School and Pulaski Road Elementary School.
District Superintendent Robert Banzer said in a statement sent to parents that he was appalled by the news and, "I have confirmed with Huntington Coach that this driver will no longer service our district. Again, we are truly disheartened to learn of these allegations."
Titone is facing charges including sex abuse and possessing a sexual performance by a child. The judge issued a $75,000 bond and an order of protection for the alleged victim at his arraignment.
Titone is expected to be back in court on Friday.
