Police: 4 bodies found at Oak Beach
Suffolk County police have confirmed the discovery of three sets of skeletal remains in Oak Beach Monday.
Officials say the findings come after the remains of a body were uncovered by a canine unit during a routine training drill off the shoulder of Ocean Parkway on Saturday afternoon.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer told News 12 "I don't think its a coincidence that four bodies ended up in this area. Certainly we're looking at the possibility that we could have a serial killer."
Suffolk police say the exercise was held in the area because of a missing persons report. They say 24-year-old Shannon Gilbert, of New Jersey, was reported missing in May. Officials say she is a Craigslist prostitute last seen meeting a client on Fire Island.
Police say the three additional bodies were found as they returned to the area between Cedar and Gilgo beaches to search for additional evidence. They are now continuing to comb the beach and believe there could be more bodies.
Authorities say the first set of remains is with the medical examiner and no bodies have been identified. Police believe the remains could have been at the location for about one to two years.
