A recently retired couple from Oceanside was looking forward to their Caribbean cruise, but their plans for a relaxing vacation were scuttled when a deadly fire broke out on board.
Jerilyn and Jerome Goldchain were on the Oceania Insignia. A fire broke out aboard the ship just three days into the cruise, while they were docked in St. Lucia. The Goldchains smelled smoke and quickly went back to their cabin for money and passports before they were forced off the ship.
All passengers were evacuated, some still in their bathing suits.
The fire killed a crew member and two contractors, according to officials.
The Goldchains returned to their home in Oceanside last night with only the clothes on their backs and a few other items. They say their clothing will be mailed to them at some point.
Cruise officials say all 650 people on the ship will be refunded 100 percent, and will get another 50 percent off their next cruise.
The U.S. Coast Guard and the NTSB are investigating the fire.
Oceania Cruises, which is owned by Norwegian Cruise Lines, says its condolences go out to the families of the victims who died in the fire.
