NYPD: Knife-wielding man fatally shot by police officers in Wakefield

Police say officers shot and killed a man who they say was chasing a woman with a knife Thursday night in Wakefield.
Investigators say the victim knew her attacker, and if it wasn't for two narcotics officers nearby, the situation could have been deadly for her.
Detectives spent several hours Friday morning collecting evidence up and down the intersection of East 233rd Street and Barnes Avenue, where police still have the street closed.
Detectives say the suspect was 51 years old and lived near the area. Authorities have not released his name and are waiting for a family member to identity him.
Police say two undercover narcotic officers happened to stop at a traffic light when they heard a woman screaming for her life and running away from a man chasing her with a knife.
When those officers intervened, they say the suspect refused to drop the knife.
Investigators say the man charged at the officers, who responded by firing five to six rounds at the suspect, killing him.
Authorities not only recovered a knife from the man, but authorities say they found numerous knives at the scene and on him at the hospital.
What he was planning to do with the knives is unknown, but police say he was angry at the victim for not calling him back.
It remains unclear what was the relationship between the victim and the suspect.
As for the victim, investigators say she was not injured, and neither were the officers involved.
