North Bellmore firefighter Matthew Greve pleads not guilty to torching car

A North Bellmore volunteer fighter pleaded not guilty today to torching a man's car.

According to court documents, 25-year-old Matthew Greve, of West Hempstead, confessed to Nassau police that he torched a 1999 Jeep in North Bellmore on May 19. Police say Greve told them that he damaged the car of his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend after a night of heavy drinking at a firefighters' dinner.

Greve's attorney says he is looking into the circumstances in which the statement was made to police.

The North Bellmore Fire Department says it does not comment on specific disciplinary matters but says any firefighter charged with this type of offense would be suspended.
