NJ MVC to begin partial reopening in June

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle offices will begin to partially reopen this month.

The agency will begin drop-off and pick-up transactions only on June 15. Road tests and reissuing of new licenses and permits are expected to start on June 29. In-person transactions will be limited.

"With the help of some New Jersey colleges, we have been able to add 11 road tests courses on a temporary basis. And we're reassigning over 100 safety specialists from our bus inspection units to serve as road test examiners," says MVC Chief Administrator Sue Fulton.

Officials say this will allow the agency to triple the amount of road tests they do per week.

In order to limit crowds, some agencies will be designated as licensing centers and others as vehicle centers.

Starting June 15, permits from driving schools and high schools will be processed on a drop-off basis. As well, registration and title work from dealers can be done at vehicle centers.

The MVC is expected to clear a three-month backlog by late summer.
