Civil rights activists are pushing for answers after new details were released in the shooting of Kamal Flowers.
His death sparked much controversy - and calls for reform in the New Rochelle community.
A makeshift memorial with candles arranged in the letter "K" marks the spot on Sharot Street in New Rochelle where 24-year-old Flowers was shot and killed by a New Rochelle police officer on June 5.
More than a week after his death, authorities have identified the officer who fired the fatal shot as five-year veteran Alec McKenna.
Mark McLean is the head of the New Rochelle NAACP. He and Flowers' family are demanding Gov. Andrew Cuomo appoint the state attorney general as a special prosecutor in the case.
The case is currently being investigated by the Westchester County DA's Office.
Authorities say Flowers was the passenger in a car that was pulled over by McKenna and another officer on Pierce Street just before 11 p.m. on June 5.
Flowers reportedly fled the scene and was chased by McKenna, who caught up with him two blocks away on Sharot Street.
According to the latest report, Flowers displayed a gun when McKenna tried to use a Taser on him, and that's when McKenna shot him.
Police released a picture of a gun recovered at the scene. They say it was close to where Flowers was lying on the ground.
McKenna and another officer have been put on administrative leave.
The Police Benevolent Association is standing by them saying that "they acted within the law."
Chris Greco, the New Rochelle PBA president, released a statement saying in part that he’s concerned how officer McKenna’s name became known prior to an official release from the department.  Greco also says McKenna’s safety remains a top priority.
