The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office says that a mother and her 9-month-old son were pronounced dead after their car was pulled from a pond in Piscataway.
Authorities were called to New Market Pond located near Stelton Road and Lakeview Avenue around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday for reports that a small SUV was floating inside the pond.
The prosecutor identified the mother as 30-year-old Edison resident Tamequa Robinson. Her son’s name was not released.
Police were on the scene for most of Tuesday trying to piece together what happened. They studied the area and canvassed the neighborhood for security video.
It was unclear how the pair died or why the car was in the water. It was also not clear how long the vehicle was in the water before someone called 911.
An autopsy is pending.
This portion of the pond is largely open, with only a curb, the sidewalk and a strip of grass between the roadway and the water.
Hours after the SUV was spotted, it was towed away.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Joe Naccarato of the Piscataway Police Department at 732-562-1100 or Detective Paul Kelley of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3330.
