An 18-year-year man from Mount Vernon was shot in the leg early Sunday morning near 215 West First St. according to Malcolm Clark, a special assistant to Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard.
Jae Collins says the 18-year-old victim is his nephew, Tommy. He told News 12 that a second victim, his 16-year-old son, Jarid, fell while trying to run from the shooting and broke his leg.
“They are honor students, not into gang violence. They're great kids,” he said. “They were coming from a party. My wife woke me up. There was blood all in our building."
The mayor’s office says the boys were transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in stable condition. It also says a vehicle that was occupied was also struck during the shooting, but there were no injuries inside.
Jae Collins says he is praying for a full recovery for his nephew and son, both of whom play football for Mount Vernon High School. He says Jarid is the nephew of former Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas.
News 12 has reached out to Mount Vernon police about the shooting. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the Detective Division at 914-665-2510.
