March on Washington commemorated at Touro Law School

Long Islanders were among the millions of Americans who commemorated the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington today.

Touro Law School Professor Jeffrey Morris gave his students a lesson on the impact that the event and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech had on the nation. Morris, who was a young intern at the time, attended the march 50 years ago today.

Touro Law School Dean Emeritus Howard Glickstein was also at the event. Glickstein helped draft both the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Glickstein says there has been significant progress in the last 50 years, but he says schools are more segregated now than in 1954 and that housing and employment discrimination persists.

Both professors hope today's lesson will inspire at least one student to continue to do civil rights work.
