Retailers across Long Island are hoping big post-Christmas sales will help get shoppers back to their stores Friday. Many stores are offering deep discounts, doorbuster sales and other incentives in an attempt to offset the usual returns that come the day after Christmas. J.C. Penney opened up at 5:30 a.m., the earliest opening in the store's history for the day after Christmas. The chain had more than 100 doorbuster sale items and 75 percent off Christmas decorations. Other chains offering special sales included Sears, with jeans for $10, and Macy's, with select items discounted by as much as 75 percent.
The Roosevelt Field mall was packed Friday and store workers say they?re offering the biggest deals yet. In another sign of a flailing economy, other stores offered going-out-of-business sales.
Retailers hope the sales can try to salvage a poor holiday shopping season. A report released by SpendingPulse says early numbers suggest retail sales were down at least 5.5 percent from 2007. According to the International Council of Shopping Centers, it was the worst holiday season in 35 years.
