LI-based soldiers bid farewell ahead of deployment

The 125 members of the 310th Military Police Battalion were joined by their loved ones at Farmingdale College today before being shipped out to Afghanistan. For Long Island's largest military police unit, this will be the third deployment since Sept. 11, 2001. The unit's commander, Lt. Col. Jacqueline Gordon, of Copiague, has promised the soldiers' families to take good care of their loved ones.Sgt. David Carmona, of West Hempstead, has been in Iraq twice, and now he's headed for a nine-month to one-year deployment in Afghanistan. The Uniondale-based unit will depart tomorrow for Fort Bliss, Texas, before continuing on to Afghanistan.The decorated 310th MP Battalion lost only one of its members back in 2003 at a roadside checkpoint in Iraq.
