Long Island activist groups are joining forces to lobby for federal help paying off LIPA?s debt for the defunct Shoreham power plant.
A coalition of environmentalists, civic and business leaders say if Washington can bail out Wall Street, it should rescue Main Street, too. For every dollar LIPA customers pay, 16 cents goes to service toward the power authority?s debt on the shuttered facility.
The Fix LIPA coalition says it will be attending a LIPA trustees meeting next week to formally make a request for a federal debt bailout. LIPA CEO Kevin Law says in a statement he "welcomes any and all ideas or assistance to continue his reform efforts.?
Economist Irwin Kellner, however, says the chance of Washington giving LIPA bailout money is slim to none.
