Suffolk police are stepping up foot and vehicle patrols in Huntington Station after a series of violent incidents has jarred residents.
On Feb. 20, a teenager was shot on New York Avenue in front of a bodega after a brawl involving 15 young men. A week before that, a 21-year-old landscaper was shot and stabbed to death in front of a bar. The previous week, two men were injured in a shooting near the Huntington train station.
In the last 10 days, Suffolk police say a man on a bicycle fired several rounds into a barber shop, hitting a 15-year-old boy in the arm. All of these incidents happened in the vicinity of New York Avenue in Huntington Station.
Residents say they welcome the added protection.
?Well, I'm very happy about it and I heard that this weekend they went to bars searching for?drug abuse, alcohol abuse or whatever, no IDs, so I think they?re doing the right thing finally,? says accountant Alexandra Sperling. One of the teens was shot in front of her business.
Twenty-one additional officers will be put on foot patrol. Those officers will be coordinating with highway safety teams and the gang unit, according to police.
