The initiative calls to install two cameras on each of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s 6,455 subway cars as the city gears up to increase ridership to pre-pandemic levels.
While Hochul says transit crime is down 4.5% from 2019, the cameras will give police a bird's-eye-view of the entire train to make sure everyone is safe. About 200 trains cars already have the cameras installed.
The MTA says it will take about 40 hours to install the cameras on each train car. Funding comes from the MTA and Homeland Security.
After the Sunset Park shooting back in April, there are still concerns about the effectiveness of surveillance at subway stations. MTA CEO Janno Lieber added that the equipment is expected to be high-performance cameras using more modern technology that won't frequently break down.
