Food fight: District divided on sweet treats at school

Parents, teachers and kids in the Malverne School District have been left in a sour mood about whether sweet treats should be allowed in the classroom. The district has a strict no-food policy for its classrooms, barring cupcakes and other goodies even from birthday celebrations. Instead of sweets, children can have a dance party or an extra 15 minutes of recess. Some parents and students think sweets should be permitted, and the school board says it is reviewing its policy to possibly allow birthdays to be celebrated with food once each month. School board trustee Gina Genti says the district isn't trying to tell parents what they can feed their kids, but is instead trying to prevent parents from feeding other people's children.
