Officials say the rebuilding of Fire Island since Sandy will begin in January.

According to officials, the $700 million flood control project will shield the battered South Shore.

About 13 miles of dunes will be built on the barrier island.

The plan is the first phase of the projection project that will stretch all the way to Montauk.
