Fairfield police and animal control officers removed more than 80 chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks and cats from a home on Churchill Street Saturday morning.

The event started with a medical call around 8:30 a.m.

Police say that when firefighters went inside to treat the resident, they notified the police officials about a possible animal cruelty situation.

Police say the responding officers found the home to be in a state of squalor with animal waste throughout.

Stephanie Henry lives across the street from the home.

She told News 12 that an elderly woman resides in the home and sells eggs.

The animals were taken to local shelters for evaluation.

The extraction process of the animals from the home went on for hours and hours. Many vans were filled with numerous cages.

A police investigation is now underway.

First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick released a statement saying: "We've all seen situations where many times individuals who have good intentions to help animals get overwhelmed. This appears to be one of those cases. I'm glad the animals were found in good health. I want to thank Fairfield Police and our Animal Control for acting quickly and the assisting town's Animal Control officers from Bridgeport, Stratford, and Trumbull for working to ensure the safety of these animals. We are lucky to live in a community where we can all work together to rescue animals in distress."
