A Nassau County police officer, who was seriously injured in a car crash, left Nassau University Medical Center Thursday to a chorus of cheers and bagpipes.
Inspector Robert Psoinas was critically injured in a T-bone crash on Sept. 16 on Woodbury Road. He suffered multiple internal injuries, leg and pelvic fractures. Doctors are calling his recovery "a miracle."
"It is very satisfying to see that he has come such a long way, with all the drive and motivation and fight that he has in him," said Dr. Kelley Sookraj.
Psoinas was overwhelmed by the show of support. Before leaving, he thanked the team of surgeons and nurses for saving his life.
"The only reason why I'm here now is because of the outstanding work these surgeons do," he said.
Doctors said Psoinas is still undergoing physical therapy. They expect him to walk again in a few weeks.
