New Yorkers protested in the heart of Manhattan Thursday to raise awareness on the unrest happening in the country of Colombia.
Hundreds gathered outside the United Nations Headquarters with signs alleging that the Colombian government is killing their people and trying to silence them.
The Colombian protests were sparked by a proposed tax increase. The nation's president withdrew that tax plan on Sunday.
The initial protests were met with force from law enforcement. Police opened fire on demonstrators, killing 16 protesters and one policeman on Monday.
Demonstrators say they hope to encourage their loved ones back home to continue to fight.
The United Nations released a statement on the unrest, saying they urge Colombia’s government to protect the rights of protesters.
