started as a pop-up in Newark is now a staple in the community - a Black-owned
drive-in movie theater is returning for its second season.
Newark Moonlight Cinema opened during the pandemic
after the owners say they were unable to work due to stay-at-home orders. Ayana
and Siree Morris have opened the theater at a new location; the site of the
former Baxter Terrace
complex.
The new location can hold 300 cars and has two 800-square foot shipping container screens for simultaneous screenings. A concession stand was also installed.
The gates open at 7 p.m. and movies start at 9 p.m.
Moviegoers are encouraged to dress in African attire to celebrate the screening
of "Coming 2 America."
