Artist Katherine Hanley and students at JFK Elementary School in East Islip are creating a mosaic piece that will leave all of their marks at the school.
Hanley, whose children attend JFK, and the students are creating a permanent mosaic mural outside the school. Before school let out, every student from kindergarten through fifth grade painted a tile to be used in the mosaic.Hanley also received help from other parents in the area. Sue Kavanagh, a fellow JFK parent, teamed up with Hanley to take charge of the project. Michael Dickman, a builder for Fire Island Contracting, volunteered to build the 8-foot mahogany frame. The mosaic will be finished this week and unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony when school starts in September.
